A chiropractic adjustment is a hands-on treatment used to improve a joint’s range of motion and relieve pain. Once your chiropractor locates an area of joint fixation or stiffness — determined by orthopedic and range of motion testing — he positions you in either a seated or lying position on the treatment table.
When you’re ready, your chiropractor places his hands on specific contact points on the bones surrounding the affected joint and gives a quick impulse with his hands. You may hear or feel a cracking or popping sensation. This sensation is a natural release of carbon dioxide from inside your joint, similar to opening a carbonated drink.
A chiropractic adjustment takes less than a minute to perform, though you may need multiple adjustments in different areas. Most patients report an immediate improvement in their range of motion after an adjustment.
Some people experience muscle soreness for a day or two after an adjustment, similar to working out for the first time.
