Chiropractic Care Q & A

What is chiropractic care?

Chiropractic care is a health care specialty involving the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders by your doctor of chiropractic.

Your chiropractor at Comprehensive Neurology and Pain Center of Connecticut provides hands-on treatments and therapies to address a variety of acute and chronic pain conditions in your neck, back, spine, and joints, including your shoulders, hips, and knees.

What types of treatments do chiropractors offer?

While chiropractic care is most commonly known for chiropractic adjustments, your chiropractor offers a wide range of treatments to support healing, including:

  • Exercise therapy
  • Stretching
  • Electrical stimulation
  • Manual traction
  • Soft tissue therapy, including massage
  • Moist heat
  • Cryotherapy
  • Joint bracing
  • Athletic and kinesiology taping
  • Dietary management and nutritional advice

These therapies can be used independently or combined to give you an individualized treatment plan based on your specific diagnosis and recovery goals. Chiropractic care can be used in combination with physical therapy, joint injections, and before and after surgery to support your recovery, no matter where you’re at.

What conditions can benefit from chiropractic care?

Chiropractic care is an effective and noninvasive treatment for musculoskeletal conditions like:

  • Car accident injuries
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Herniated discs
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Neck and back pain
  • Arthritis
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Sciatica
  • Shoulder pain
  • Soft tissue injuries, including sprains, strains, and tendinitis

Your chiropractor works with the entire team at Comprehensive Neurology and Pain Center of Connecticut to give you the best care possible.

What is a chiropractic adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is a hands-on treatment used to improve a joint’s range of motion and relieve pain. Once your chiropractor locates an area of joint fixation or stiffness — determined by orthopedic and range of motion testing — he positions you in either a seated or lying position on the treatment table.

When you’re ready, your chiropractor places his hands on specific contact points on the bones surrounding the affected joint and gives a quick impulse with his hands. You may hear or feel a cracking or popping sensation. This sensation is a natural release of carbon dioxide from inside your joint, similar to opening a carbonated drink.

A chiropractic adjustment takes less than a minute to perform, though you may need multiple adjustments in different areas. Most patients report an immediate improvement in their range of motion after an adjustment.

Some people experience muscle soreness for a day or two after an adjustment, similar to working out for the first time.
